Summer Academic Reading & Writing Enrichment  (G5-6)

Course Objectives

 

This course helps upper elementary students build literary analysis skills, emotional insight, and descriptive writing techniques through a fast-paced, verse-style novel.

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Analyze character motivations using text evidence

  • Compare and contrast character relationships

  • Describe conflict and resolution using vivid detail

  • Write a well-structured fictional story with dialogue and emotion

 

Weekly Class Structure

 

Each class balances active discussion with targeted writing instruction. The verse-novel format offers opportunities for students to explore rhythm, voice, and identity while practicing narrative techniques.

Weekly activities include:

  • Verse novel reading & discussion
    Examine poetic storytelling, structure, and themes

  • Writing workshops
    Develop scenes with description, action, and inner thoughts

  • Character analysis activities
    Explore sibling dynamics, competition, and family tension

  • Optional at-home writing extensions
    Connect personal experiences with story themes

 

 Final Project & Wrap-Up (Week 8)

 

In the final week, students will present a polished short story that reflects the themes and writing techniques studied in the course. They will:

  • Create a fictional character and storyline

  • Incorporate dialogue, emotional depth, and clear structure

  • Share their stories with classmates in a supportive space

Parents will receive:

  • A personalized progress summary

  • Highlights of the student’s analytical and creative growth

  • A Certificate of Completion

  • Suggestions for continued writing development (if desired)

Creative Writing for the Logic Stage Information
  • Monday 6:30-7:30PM

  • 8 Session

  • Class meets once per week for  75 minutes.

  • Class cap: 6 students.

  • Designed for grades 5-6.

  • 📖 Mini booklet or stapled blank pages (for creating personal storybooks or writing journals)
