About Rachel

Rachel has over twelve years of experience in teaching and academic tutoring. She specializes in helping students craft outstanding college admission essays, creative writing pieces, graduate-level research papers, literature reviews, and grant applications.

She is an incoming PhD student in History at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) for the 2025–2031 cohort. UCSD’s History Department is ranked among the top 20 in the U.S. Rachel holds an MPhil in Development Studies from the University of Cambridge, where she graduated with distinction. Her research focused on the political economy of international development, and her degree was assessed entirely through research papers, demonstrating her strength in structured academic writing and evidence-based argumentation. She also earned a BA in International Security and Conflict Resolution from San Diego State University, graduating summa cum laude.

Rachel began teaching as a classroom tutor in high school and later served as a Resident Advisor at SDSU. She was also a Youth Program Associate for the United Nations’ Education for Justice initiative, contributing to the development and implementation of international education curricula. While pursuing her graduate degree at Cambridge, she was elected as the student representative for her 60-person postgraduate cohort. She has taught in a variety of educational settings, from private schools in California to youth detention centers in Kenya.

Rachel has extensive debate experience, having competed as a national-level parliamentary debater (NPDA), with additional training in Lincoln–Douglas (LD) and British Parliamentary (BP) formats. She has written speeches for senior diplomats, ambassadors, and government officials working with or within the United Nations.

Outside the classroom, Rachel is a passionate gardener and plant lover who cares for over 50 houseplants in her San Diego home. She enjoys planning camping and hiking trips with her partner, Shane, and their families. She is also an active volunteer with the San Diego River Park Foundation, helping to preserve and protect local natural spaces.

Nonfiction Reading & Writing Series: Expository Writing & Introduction to Argumentation (Grades 2–8)

This multi-level series equips students in Grades 2–8 with progressive skills in nonfiction reading, expository writing, and introductory argumentation. Through engaging real-world topics—such as animals, science, the environment, and society—students develop key strategies for understanding informational texts, summarizing ideas, and organizing their own writing with clarity and purpose.

Beginning with identifying main ideas and supporting details, students move toward structured writing, fact-based reasoning, and beginner-level argumentative writing. Advanced learners will gain confidence crafting five-paragraph essays, citing evidence, and addressing opposing viewpoints.

Aligned with Florida’s B.E.S.T. ELA standards, this series lays a strong foundation for academic writing success, critical thinking, and effective communication in both school and beyond.
